Inserts are the best way to convert a typical, inefficient, masonry fireplace into a heat-generating, aesthetically pleasing unit. The illustration at left shows the normal way an old fireplace is retrofitted with an efficent direct vent gas insert. Pellet and wood inserts are also available to fit into your existing fireplace. 1. The old chimney is capped with a metal fixture to allow free flow of exhaust and combustion air while keeping rainwater out. 2. A flashing seals of the chimney from the elements 3. Fresh combustion air is drawn from the outside near the top of the chimney and directed downward through a special pipe 4. Exhaust gas exists through a second pipe. 5. Both fresh air and exhaust vents are connected to an enclosed unit that is designed to fit inside the existing fireplace. |
